Brief History of Roger Oates

Roger Oates and Fay Morgan were approached by the owners of a charming countryside house in the late 80s. The owners had discovered an old flatwoven piece hidden beneath the wooden floorboards. Typically, coverings from the 18th century were a plain colour without any design or pattern.

Roger and Fay found a vintage fabric that was very colourful and had a detailed design. They were inspired by it and created Venetian Flatweave, which is a beautiful floor covering.

We created our first-floor coverings by hand-weaving them with care and affection. To increase production, we adjusted the traditional Hattersley looms to weave the thick wool material while preserving the handmade quality. The charming striped patterns gained immense popularity and redefined flatweave carpets in the twentieth century.

Since then, our story has grown and changed as we’ve revisited our archives while still keeping a focus on design that allows us to experiment with connecting modern design for the homes of today with our heritage from the past.
